LETTER FROM THE HEAD

Image

Dear Gunston Families,

When my wife was pregnant with our second child, a good friend (who was then single and childless) asked me: "Are you hoping to have a boy or a girl?" As an experienced parent, I simply answered, "I'm just hoping for healthy." As parents, we cherish our children's health, and we understand the essential relationship between health, and the process of growth, development, and joy. Yet as students enter adolescence, they navigate a significant health choice hurdle—the decision to use legal or illegal substances—that can often determine their long-term well-being.  ECOLOGY CLASS

"The Gunston Ecology class is piloting an exciting new project in collaboration with The Center for Environment & Society at Washington College. T.R.E.E. (Tree research for Environmental Education) is the idea of Dr. Levin at CES. TREE is a way to create a connection between students and their on-campus tree species, to establish a sense of ownership, responsibility and value.

Selected trees are "tagged" using QR coded metal tags, data is gathered by students and uploaded to a corresponding Histree database. Growth, condition, and maintenance are monitored and recorded from year to year—this data can then be correlated to weather and environmental changes over time, to monitor the impact on health of various species.

Each tag has a QR code that will enable the general public to scan and see the tree information. Students are being encouraged to choose trees that are important to the health of the Bay and significant to the Gunston Campus.  Gunston is the pilot for the TREE Program, the first tree to be tagged was a native red bud on the Gunston Bridge."
