 Earth Day

Gunston celebrated its annual Earth Day on Friday, April 21st. Our speakers on Climate Change, ranging from former U.S. Congressmen to regional scientists and educators, did a fantastic job helping students understand and apply the latest in climate science. Students grappled with issues of sea level rise, resiliency planning, and their personal reactions to the topics discussed.

The second half of the day offered students the opportunity to connect with the natural world and offer service. Activities included canoeing, sailing, fishing, yoga, trash collection, and herb garden planting.  Student led workshops introduced students to the importance of solitary bees as vital pollinators. Keep your eye for Gunston's "Bee Hotels" to be installed this summer.

The Spring Formal  is Saturday, May 6 from 8 to 11 p.m. The theme is Enchanted Forest. Tickets are $20 per person. Students should purchase tickets prior to the dance. If you are bringing a guest, please provide us with contact information, should an emergency arise.

Gunston Sailors Take First Place

Image

On Sunday, April 23 The Gunston School's Sailing Team held the Gunston Women's Open hosting seven schools including Leonardtown, NERHS from Baltimore, Saints Peter & Paul and Kent Island.

The Gunston team Sophie Cooper '17 and Abby Silva '20 took first place in the "A" division.

"Sophie and Abby came out of the blocks strong, with a wire-to-wire win in the first race", said Joe Thompson, Gunston Assistant Coach. "The rest of the way they were steady, minimizing risks and relying on their excellent boat speed." The pair finished with two seconds to seal their victory.

"I enjoy sailing with Sophie," said Silva. "She's very focused, and she knows she needs to be smooth and relaxed to make the boat go as fast as it can."

Gunston's next sailing regatta is on the Potomac at DC Sail on Sunday, April 30.
