The Gunston Weekly
New Students Arrive by Boat
On Tuesday, September 5, Gunston held its annual Embarkation ceremony. As a 107-year old school, Gunston has many traditions, but few are as meaningful as Embarkation—all new students and faculty arrive on their first day to campus by boat. Gunston's sixty-four new students and seven new faculty and staff members departed from the Centreville Wharf, traveled down the Corsica River, and arrived at the school's waterfront, where they were greeted by the school's Headmaster, Mr. John Lewis. After shaking the Headmaster's hand, each student signed the school's honor code—Responsibilities of the Community, then climbed the stairs of the embankment and proceeded to shake the hand of every member of the student body, faculty and administration. "This ceremony is meaningful and symbolic" commented Lewis, "as it celebrates our unique connection to the Chesapeake Bay watershed, and also celebrates our strong sense of community." Many of Gunston's new parents were on hand to witness the event.
This year, Gunston—a co-educational college preparatory high school–is opening at a historically high enrollment of 195, and welcomes new students from Queen Anne's, Kent, Talbot, Cecil, Caroline, and Anne Arundel counties, as well as Delaware. Gunston also welcomes a number of students from overseas, with students arriving this year from Switzerland, and China. Lewis said, "We're excited to be welcoming such a large and talented class of new students, and with our largest enrollment, we are looking forward to a great year."

Back to School Night for Parents:
Monday, September 18
Parents, you are invited to come "Back to School" on Monday, September 18. The program begins at 6:00 p.m. in the Field House. The evening will open with a message from Headmaster John Lewis. Parents will then follow a schedule of their student's classes. This program provides parents the opportunity to meet advisors and classroom teachers and to become familiar with their student's academic courses and expectations for the year.
As this is an evening event, we invite parents to bring a room temperature dessert or hors d'oeuvre. During homework periods in the student schedules, parents may socialize and have a bite to eat. This is a great time to meet and mingle with parents of all grades.
To give faculty and staff a little recuperation time, we will begin school at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 19. In the morning, school transportation will run according to our delayed start schedule.
We look forward to seeing you when you go
"Back to School."

Gunston's staff member to perform at Church Hill Theatre
Miss Davis will be performing in Doubt, a Parable at Church Hill Theatre September 8-24. Set in a Church School in the Bronx in 1964, just one year after John F. Kennedy's assassination and on the brink of the Civil Rights Movement, Doubt, a Parable examines how far one is willing to go in the name of Truth. Themes of social hierarchy within the parish steer a passionate conflict surrounding the school's first African-American student. Doubt, a Parable earned John Patrick Shanley a Tony Award for Best Play and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and was later made into an Academy Award-nominated film starring Meryl Streep and Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Shows are Fridays & Saturdays at 8PM and Sundays at 2PM. Reservations can be made by calling the CHT office at 410-556-6003 or online at churchhilltheatre.org.
