The Gunston Weekly

On Friday, Oct. 20, the Gunston Science and Engineering Club launched our fifth mission to "near space"—the region above where aircraft fly, but below the orbits of satellites. The payload included cameras, tracking devices, and instrumentation to measure temperature and pressure. A weather balloon was used to carry the payload to the stratosphere.

Girls Varsity Soccer Advances to NMSL Final

After beating Jemicy School 2-0 on Wednesday, Gunston Girls' Soccer will advance to the Northern Maryland Soccer League Championship on Friday, October 27th—making this trip two years in a row.

"Obviously we're excited to make a championship final," Coach Jon Mellinger said. "But we need to maintain our focus. The benefit of playing in consecutive years is that we know what to expect and last year we left a bit disappointed, so we're hoping to change the script a bit. Making consecutive finals is something the program has not done in quite some time."

The Lady Herons completed the NMSL regular season with a 4-1 record, falling to last year's NMSL champion, FCA, 2-1 in the first game of the season. However, they bounced back with four consecutive victories in conference play to make the final.

In the semifinal matchup, senior Lily Phipps broke the tie with a well placed shot from outside the box in the 14th minute. Solid play from the midfield and defense ensued before sophomore Lily Judd provided the insurance goal in the 60th minute. Senior goalkeeper Ryleigh Paskoski
had another shutout victory but did not see much action while being protected by senior sweeper Emma Hottel and stout defensive play from freshman Sidney Nittle, junior Marisa Pisapia, and senior Charlotte Sheets.

Parent Conferences

Conferences will take place on November 9th and 10th

There will be no school for students on these days. Parents will register online for 10 minute meetings with individual teachers through PickATime. Details on how to schedule conferences will be sent via email on Monday, October 30.

These sessions provide an opportunity to review the quarterly grade reports, receive and share student feedback on classes, and preview the direction that classes and assignments will take in the second half of the semester.

"Come join us in Ecuador this Spring Break! Journeying through Quito and Mindo, Gunston students will immerse themselves in Ecuadorian life and culture. While in Mindo, each student will stay in the home of his/her own Ecuadorian family! They will take Spanish language classes (open to all levels) and learn about the political, social and environmental issues affecting the region. The program is open to ALL students. Students will be accepted for the program on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The program will need 12 students to sign up in order to run. The cost will vary depending on how many students sign up. The price will be approximately $2500 + airfare (estimated at $600 roundtrip).

The program will last 9 days. Students will depart Saturday, March 10 and return late on Sunday, March 19th.

Missing Maps Mapathon

Come join the Washington College GIS Program and METS Guild students during our community mapathon event sponsored by Verizon! We're on a mission to help the Humanitarian Open Street Map Team (HOT) in mapping the world's most vulnerable places so that local and international organizations can better respond in times of crisis—such as hurricanes, earthquakes, and wildfires.

How can I contact the organizer with any questions? Contact Ms. Kelsey Newcomb at knewcomb2@washcoll.edu or at (410) 810-5031.

Juniors and Seniors

NACAC College Fairs are coming to our area! These fairs are large, free and open to the public, often drawing well over 100 colleges per fair. This is a great opportunity to learn about a large number of colleges in one night. Many colleges attend these fairs in the hopes that students from schools they are unable to visit this year will be there to chat with them.

There are National College fairs for those who prefer a wide ranging, well-rounded education, Performing and Visual Arts College Fairs for those looking to focus primarily on the arts and STEM fairs for those interested in attending science, technology, engineering and math institutions. Please check out the link to all of the NACAC Fairs being offered this year.
