Varsity Girls Basketball

1/7 vs. North County
LOSS 46-47

Gunston’s Girls Basketball team came up just short in a nail-biter on Wednesday night, falling 47–46 to North Dorchester in a game that went down to the final possession. The matchup was a physical, back-and-forth battle that showcased resilience, defense, and clutch scoring from both sides.
Senior Layla Kent delivered a standout performance for Gunston, pouring in 24 points to pace the offense and keep her team within striking distance throughout the contest. Kent attacked the rim, knocked down key shots in the second half, and provided a steady scoring presence as Gunston mounted multiple comeback pushes. Gunston also received key contributions from MaLou Trinkner, who added 6 points in the paint, providing valuable interior minutes on both ends of the floor. Freshman Elle Owings made her presence felt as well, chipping in 4 points and recording 4 steals, sparking momentum with her defensive energy and pressure. Despite a late surge and a strong defensive stand in the closing minute, Gunston’s final look at the basket rimmed out as North Dorchester escaped with the one-point victory. While the result was a tough one, the performance highlighted Gunston’s grit, balance, and emerging young talent, signs of promise as the team continues through the season.

Varsity Boys Basketball

1/7 at Key School
LOSS 40-46

The Herons delivered an incredible, high-energy performance in a tightly contested MIAA C-Conference matchup against the Key School Obezags, battling from tip to buzzer in a game that came down to the final minutes. After trailing by just three points at the end of the first quarter (8–11), the Herons kept the pressure on and went into halftime down only two (15–17). The momentum continued to swing Gunston’s way as the Herons surged ahead early in the fourth quarter, taking a 32–30 lead and holding strong with just two minutes remaining (38–35).

Senior Ethan Harper turned in a standout performance, finishing with 12 points, 3 steals, and 6 assists. His leadership and all-around effort were pivotal, truly holding the team together in key moments and setting the tone on both ends of the floor. Despite a late push from the Obezags, the Herons’ grit, composure, and relentless effort were on full display in one of the most competitive games of the season. This was a statement performance that showed just how tough this group is.

JV Boys Basketball

1/6 at Indian Creek
LOSS 25-59
JV Boys Basketball fell to Indian Creek, 25–59. Despite being without the team’s leading scorer, Zac Gray, who was recently moved up to play with the Varsity team, the Herons were able to put together a solid offensive effort. This created an opportunity for other athletes to step up and add to the stat book, including James Schopfer with 9 points and Ben Mentesana, who contributed 3 points.
