Maryland High School Rowing Championship Gold 2026

Maryland State High School Rowing Championships

The Gunston Crew team delivered an outstanding performance at the 2026 Maryland State High School Rowing Championships, showcasing the hard work and dedication they have put in throughout the season. Gunston was also proud to host the Maryland State Championships for the fourth consecutive year, as this year’s regatta featured expanded competition with more than 170 athletes, the largest field the event has ever seen.

Competing against top programs from across the state, Gunston earned an impressive 2nd place overall team finish, trailing only DeMatha. The Herons celebrated multiple podium finishes, including 1st place victories in the MV2 and MV4 events, along with runner-up finishes in the WN4, MJV4, and WV4 races. The MN4 crew also secured a strong 3rd place finish. Adding to an already remarkable day, Gunston recorded the fastest time of the entire regatta, clocking an exceptional 5:26.90 in the MV4 event with the crew of Jed Cohen ’26, Eamon Schopfer ’26, Austin Koterwas ’27, Zac Hatch ’27, and Emery Day ’26. Congratulations to all of our rowers and coaches on an incredible championship performance and a season defined by growth, perseverance, and success.
 

Spring Sailing 2026

Sailing Team Competes at Two Weekend Events

The sailing team was represented at two regattas this past weekend, showcasing strong performances across both team and fleet racing formats. Our T1 sailors traveled to Gibson Island on Saturday and Sunday to compete in the Baker Qualifier Team Race event. This marked just the second Team Race appearance in Gunston history and an event for which we did not initially expect to qualify. A huge congratulations to Andrew Shingledecker ’27, Kate Doffermyer ’28, Preston Allen ’27, Mercer Rensberger ’29, Ethan Paniere ’27, Caroline Thomas ’26, and Lizzy Chiochetti ’27 for their outstanding effort and commitment throughout the regatta.

Meanwhile, our T2 sailors competed in Baltimore on Saturday in a Fleet Race regatta and brought home an impressive second-place overall finish. The team also captured multiple first-place finishes in individual races despite incredibly high winds and challenging conditions. Congratulations to Lizzy Chiochetti ’27, Izzy Labrador ’28 Connor Joyce ’26, and Meredith Dalzell ’28 on an outstanding performance. 

Varsity Girls Tennis

4/23 vs. Salisbury Christian School
SENIOR DAY
WIN 7-0

On April 23, the Gunston Girls delivered an impressive 7–0 victory at home against Salisbury Christian, with the added highlight of newer players stepping into the lineup and contributing in a big way. In singles, Annie Geng ’26 led the way with an 8–2 win, while Eleonor Hubbert ’26 and Scotia Hopper ’27 each earned solid 8–5 and 8–2 victories. Izza Warot ’26 and Madi Hopwood ’27 both made the most of their opportunities, playing confidently and securing strong wins (8–4 and 8–5), showcasing the team’s potential.  

Doubles play remained dominant, as Kate Andrews ’26 and Kennedy Cooper ’27 controlled their match with an 8–2 win, and Zoey Loveless ’27 and Malu Trinkner ’28 closed out the sweep convincingly, 8–1.

Overall, it was a complete team performance, with new players stepping up and performing well, reinforcing Gunston’s momentum as the season progresses.

Varsity Girls Lacrosse

Girls Varsity Lacrosse delivered another commanding performance, rolling to a 16–1 victory over The Salisbury School behind balanced scoring, dominant draw control play, and relentless defensive pressure. Leading the offensive charge was Senior Layla Kent, who delivered a standout performance with 7 goals, pacing the Herons’ high-powered attack. Mary Gordon ’29 added 2 goals and 1 assist, while Emma Walker ’27 played a key role in facilitating the offense with 3 assists and 1 goal, helping Gunston maintain steady offensive flow. 

Additional scoring came from Eleanor Owings ’29, Elena Szwaja ’27, Emma Morris ’26, Brynn Roberts ’27, Autumn Monahan ’29, and Kate Zottarelli ’27, each contributing a goal to round out the balanced scoring effort. Morris also added an assist, highlighting the team’s unselfish play and strong ball movement throughout the game. 

Gunston’s dominance extended beyond scoring. The Herons controlled possession at the draw circle, led by Kent, who won 9 of 10 draws.Defensively, Gunston applied consistent pressure, forcing turnovers and limiting Salisbury’s offensive chances. Isabel Gerstmyer ’28 stood out with 4 caused turnovers, while Owings added 2 caused turnovers and several others contributed key defensive stops. Ground ball efforts from Emily Steele ’26, Genevieve Baughman ’26, Mattie Schauber ’29, and Gerstmyer helped the Herons quickly transition from defense to offense. In goal, Jamie Tate ’27 recorded 5 saves, anchoring the defense and helping hold Salisbury to just a single goal. 

Girls JV Lacrosse

The Girls JV Lacrosse Team traveled to North Dorchester for a competitive matchup against their Varsity squad, falling 14–9 in a hard-fought contest. Despite the result, the Herons showed resilience and determination throughout the game.
Several athletes turned in standout performances, including breakout games from Kenzie Farmer ’29, Rilynn McMahan ’28, Olivia Mezger ’29, and Kayla Waaenfelz ’28. Their strong play and continued development were bright spots for the team and a great sign of progress as the season continues.

Gunston Girls Athletic Teams join the IAAM 2026 May

The Gunston School announced today that it has been formally invited by a two-thirds vote of the membership to join the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland (IAAM) as a provisional member, becoming the only school from Maryland’s Eastern Shore to hold membership in the state’s most prestigious girls’ private school athletic conference.
