ESIAC Honorable Mention: Kennedy Cooper ’27

Last Friday, May 1, at the ESIAC Championship, it was an exciting and competitive tournament with some outstanding performances from our players. 4 teams, including Gunston, competed for the championship.

Annie Geng ’26 and Abby Philippon ’27 both had an incredible run, each battling their way through the draw to reach the finals. This set up an all-team championship match, where Annie ultimately clinched the title. Abby played some of her best tennis of the season, showing determination, consistency, and growth throughout the tournament to earn her spot in the final.

Seniors Eleonor Hubbert and Kate Andrews, the doubles champions for the past two years, faced a tough challenge against SSPP’s number one and number two singles players, widely considered the strongest competitors in the field. They fought hard in a very close semi final match but suffered a heartbreaking 6–8 defeat. Despite the loss, they continued to set the standard with their sportsmanship and leadership, serving as role models for Scotia and Malou.

In doubles, Scotia Hopper ’27 & Malou Trinkner ’28 delivered one of the most thrilling matches of the tournament in the Doubles Final. After falling behind 5–2 in an 8-game pro set, they showed incredible grit to battle back and even the score at 5–5. Despite trailing again at 7–5 with a triple match point against them, they refused to give up, demonstrating resilience and teamwork throughout the match. Their perseverance paid off as they ultimately secured the win and went on to claim victory in the final with a 9-7 score. Congratulations ESIAC champions!

For the first time since 2011 the Gunston Girls Lacrosse team earned a spot in the ESIAC Championship game on Monday vs Saints Peter and Paul. The team ultimately didn’t take home the trophy, but what they accomplished this year reaching high marks in goals scored, goals allowed as well as making it to the finals for the first time in 15 years, they should be very proud! Congratulations on a phenomenal season.

Spring Crew

5/3 WMIRA Conference Championships

The Crew team wrapped up their season at the Washington Metropolitan Interscholastic Rowing Association Championships, held at Occoquan Reservoir. This is a highly competitive league, featuring 14 schools from across Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C., including programs like Gonzaga, DeMatha, St. Albans, and St. John’s. Many of these schools have student bodies averaging around 850, which makes Gunston’s performance all the more impressive.

Across the board, this was one of the strongest showings our program has had in years. Nearly every boat posted some of their best times of the season—a true reflection of the hard work, consistency, and growth of our athletes.

On the women’s side, the Varsity Girls 4 advanced to the Grand Finals and finished 6th overall, while the Women’s Novice 4 placed 3rd in their heat and also earned a spot in the Grand Finals.
For the men, the Varsity 4 had an outstanding day, advancing to the Grand Finals after recording the third-fastest time in the preliminary races, and ultimately finishing 4th overall. The Men’s Novice 4 finished 3rd overall, and the Men’s 2nd Varsity 4 placed 5th overall.

T3 Sailing

5/2 Gunston Host Home Regatta

Gunston hosted the seasonal home regatta this past weekend, and while the weather tried its best to clear the course, our sailors remained undeterred. Of the 17 teams originally slated to compete, 10 made the call to drop out due to heavy winds. Despite the challenging conditions, Gunston stayed on the water, ultimately navigating their way to 1st and 2nd place overall among the seven remaining teams. It was a weekend that rewarded persistence as much as skill. Congratulations to our sailors for keeping their cool (and their boats upright) through the gusts:

  • Harrison Lavery ’26 & Arlo Badger ’26
  • Caroline Thomas ’26 & Annabelle Baker ’27
  • Liam Friehoffer ’28 & Luke Mezger ’28
  • Stuart Johnson ’28 & Grant Edgar ’28
