05/02/25: ESIAC CHAMPIONSHIP
On Friday, May 2nd, the Gunston Girls’ Tennis team traveled to Worcester Prep School to compete in the ESIAC Championship, facing off against Worcester Prep, Salisbury Christian School, and Sts. Peter & Paul. With determination and skill, Gunston emerged victorious and proudly claimed the title of 2025 ESIAC Champions! Juniors Kate Andrews and Eleonor Hubbert delivered an outstanding performance to win the doubles championship—congratulations, Kate and Eleonor!
In singles play, Senior Elena Fraser captured the championship title and was honored as the ESIAC Player of the Year. This marks a historic moment, as Elena becomes the first girls’ tennis player in Gunston’s history to receive this prestigious award. Congratulations, Elena!
Boys’ Tennis
05/05/25: W 3-2 vs. AACS

On May 5th, the boys’ tennis team triumphed over Annapolis Area Christian School in the MIAA Quarterfinals with a strong team performance, securing the overall victory despite mixed results in singles play. In singles action, Leo Denecke ’26 fell 0-6, 0-6, and James Schopfer ’28 lost 2-5, 1-5. However, Tiago Paul ’27 delivered a dominant win, 6-1, 6-1, keeping Gunston in contention. Gunston’s doubles teams sealed the match with commanding performances. Van Topjian ’26 and Gabe Hanson ’27 cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win, while Seniors Kazys Morris and Jackson Frederick overwhelmed their opponents 6-1, 6-2. Gunston’s depth and doubles strength proved decisive in their quarterfinal victory.
05/05/25: L 1-4 vs. Glenelg Country School

On May 7th, boys’ tennis traveled to Glenelg Country School for the MIAA Semifinals, where they faced an undefeated opponent and ultimately fell short. In singles play, Glenelg proved dominant as Leo Denecke ’26 lost 0-6, 0-6; Tiago Paul ’27 fell 2-6, 1-6; and James Schopfer ’28 was defeated 2-6, 1-6. Gunston found some success in doubles, with Seniors Kazys Morris and Jackson Frederick earning a win at 6-3, 4-1 before their opponents chose to forfeit. The duo of Van Topjian ’26 and Gabe Hanson ’27 battled hard but lost 1-6, 1-5. Despite the Semifinal loss, Gunston’s season featured strong performances and a Quarterfinal victory, highlighting the team's resilience and growth throughout the season.
Triathlon
05/04/25: Nanticoke Multisport Festival

On Sunday, May 4th, the Gunston Triathlon team sent five members to compete in the Nanticoke Multisport Festival in Bivalve, Maryland. First-time multisport athletes Ella Baer ’28 (4th in female high school division), Caden Quirion ’26, Blake Algier ’26, and Willem Grant ’27 (Duathlon--run, bike, run), as well as team veteran Aidan Marketto ’26 (2nd place in 15-19 age group) raced across the 800 meter swim, 15 mile bike, and 3.1 mile run course. The team battled through the wind and rain and everyone completed the race in 2 hours or less! Next up, the team travels to Lums Pond State Park in Bear, Delaware for the final triathlon of the season.

On Sunday, May 3rd, Gunston competed in a T-3 regatta hosted by Kent Island High School at the KIYC. The day began wet and windy, with significant rain and gusts up to 18kts. Despite these challenges, our sailors gained valuable foul weather boat handling and racing experience, ultimately placing 6th. Gunston competitors included Connor Joyce ’26, Ethan Paniere ’27, AJ Friedrich ’27, Stuart Johnston ’28, Liam Freihofer ’28 and Luke Mezger ’28.

05/04/25: WMIRA Championship

On Sunday, May 4th, the Gunston crew team traveled to Lorton, Virginia to compete in the Washington Metropolitan Interscholastic Rowing Association (WMIRA) Championship for the second consecutive year. This marked Gunston's first season as a full-fledged member of the prestigious league, having raced as an exhibition team last year following our initial invitation. The WMIRA league includes 14 schools from the Virginia and Washington, D.C. region, along with Saint Andrew's School in Delaware and Gunston. On Sunday, Gunston faced off against some of the area's top rowing programs, including Gonzaga, DeMatha, St. Albans, and St. John’s. Gunston fielded five entries: a Men’s Novice 4, Men’s Second Varsity 4, Women’s Second Varsity 4, Men’s Varsity 4, and Women’s Varsity 4. The Men’s Novice 4 kicked off the day with a strong performance, finishing third in their heat to advance to the afternoon final, where they placed fifth overall—finishing ahead of powerhouse Gonzaga. Both the Men’s and Women’s Varsity 4+ crews advanced to the afternoon’s Petite Finals. The men took third in their race, finishing ahead of Whitman and Blair, while the women earned a second-place finish. The Men’s and Women’s Second Varsity 4s did not have morning heats and went straight into the afternoon finals. The Women’s 2V placed fourth, finishing ahead of Bishop O’Connell, while the Men’s 2V delivered the closest race of the day, claiming fourth place ahead of both O’Connell and DeMatha. A special thank you goes out to our seniors—Lennox Franks, Trevor Janssen, Isla McCollum, Alivia Runz, Kate Seybert, and Mia Walker—for their leadership and dedication to the program. The Herons will close out their season this Friday with an intrasquad race: The Heron Cup!

05/01/25: W 19-2 vs. Mount Carmel

On May 1st, in their regular-season finale, the Gunston Golf team delivered their strongest performance of the year, by defeating Mount Carmel 19-2. In the 1 spot, Senior Captain RP Johnson continued his winning ways with a strong performance moving his individual record to 4-2 on the season. Also, capturing wins for Gunston were Senior Alex Elfenbein, Sophomore Camilla Nonemaker and First Years Schuyler Dreeke and Will Hoelz. All five of them earned all three points from their matches. With this win Gunston clinches a playoff berth in our first season in the MIAA.
05/02/25: MIAA C Conference Championship - Individuals

On May 2nd, Seniors RP Johnson and Alex Elfenbein competed in the 18-hole stroke play championship for the C Conference. With both players turning in solid performances RP Johnson finished 3rd. He used a strong start to, which included making an easy par on the very difficult 3rd hole, to help get his round going. On the back 9 he found a bit more consistency ultimately shooting an 86. For Alex he recovered from his slow start and also had a strong showing on the back 9. Most significantly, early in the back 9 he managed the difficult stretch of 10-13. He finished in 7th place with a 99. There was a pop-up shower that led to a lightning delay and significant rain and wind. Overall, a strong showing from our seniors on a difficult course and in tough weather conditions.
Boys’ Lacrosse
05/01/25: W 14-3 vs. Lake Forest

On Thursday, May 1st, the Gunston boys' lacrosse team earned a decisive 10–2 victory over Beth Tfiloh, capping off an emotional and celebratory Senior Night in front of a supportive home crowd. Senior Jack Beasley led the way with an impressive six-goal performance. Fellow senior Gareth Borghardt added two goals, and junior Ethan Harper contributed two goals along with four assists, driving the offensive rhythm. Additional assists came from seniors Bennett Wirts (2) and Grayson Allen (1), as well as sophomore Jack Owens (1). In goal, senior Riley Walker was a steady force, making eight key saves to anchor a strong defensive effort that kept Beth Tfiloh largely in check throughout the game. Before the game, the team recognized 11 senior players and 2 senior team managers for their commitment, leadership, and contributions to the program. The dominant win was a fitting send-off for Gunston’s class of 2025, whose dedication has left a lasting mark on the team. With this win, Gunston continues to build momentum heading into the final stretch of the season.

05/07/25: L 1-3 vs Glenelg Country School
The Gunston boys' lacrosse team wrapped up their regular season this week with a pair of competitive road games, securing a key victory and showing grit against the league's top seed. On May 5, the team traveled to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel High School and delivered a commanding 7-0 win, improving their conference record to 5-3 and securing 4th place in the league standings. The offensive effort was led by seniors Bennett Wirts and Jack Beasley, who each tallied 2 goals and 1 assist. Fellow seniors Gareth Borghardt and Grayson Allen each added a goal, while sophomore Jack Owens also found the back of the net. Junior Ethan Harper contributed an assist, and senior goalie Riley Walker recorded 3 saves in the shutout.
Two days later, on May 7, Gunston closed out regular season play with a hard-fought match against top-seeded Glenelg Country School. Despite a strong defensive showing, Gunston fell 1-3, with Glenelg scoring once in the first half and twice more in the second. Senior Bennett Wirts scored Gunston’s lone goal, while goalie Riley Walker stood tall in net with an impressive 10 saves. With the regular season behind them, Gunston now sets its sights on the MIAA Quarterfinals. The team will travel to Chapelgate Christian Academy on Friday, May 9, looking to make a strong postseason run.

05/01/25: W 14-3 vs. Lake Forest

On May 1st, the Lady Herons wrapped up their season with a commanding 14–3 win over Lake Forest High School. The final game also marked Senior Day, celebrating the team’s lone senior, Grace Shepherd, who delivered a standout performance in her final game as a Lady Heron. Shepherd led the charge with 5 goals, helping secure the victory in memorable fashion. Junior Hanna Weinans made an impact off the bench, scoring her first two goals of the season. Gabi Shepherd ’27 and Jamie Tate ’28 added two goals apiece. Emma Morris ’26, Brynn Roberts ’27, and Elena Szwaja ’27 rounded out the scoring. Goalie Brinley Leech ’28 kept Lake Forest off the scoreboard for more than half the game and Emma Serravinals ’27 finished off the effort. The defense was led by Rilynn McMahan ’28, Bridget Walden ’28, Livia Widmer ’26, and Peri Overton ’27. It was a thrilling end to the season and a fitting farewell to senior captain Grace Shepherd.
