It was a really great effort by the entire team. There are often a lot of nerves and pre-race jitters with the first regatta of the season, and the Head of the Corsica was a great way to ease into our fall regatta schedule.

Our mens’ and womens’ teams both gave a strong display of endurance and skill as they paced themselves down our 5,000 meter race course and held off boats from Freedom Rowers and Episcopal High School. Fall races not only require speed but also technique and endurance in order to be successful, Our rowers proved to have all three.

The novices were also able to race a 1,500 meter course, even though they have only had two weeks of experience on the water! They were able to gain great experience and put everything they have learned to test. They show great promise and the entire coaching staff looks forward to watching them flourish this season.

The Gunston sailing team had a busy weekend split between two different regatta venues, with one of said events spanning the course of two days! On Saturday and Sunday Varsity set sail at SSA/AYC for a Tier 1 Gold regatta. Tommy McGeady and Eli Moore landed a second place finish in one of their races, as did Ian Kissel and Matthew Periconi in another race. Meanwhile, JV set sail at KIYC on Sunday for a Tier 3 Bronze regatta where Logan Kille and Cooper Hightower landed a first place in one of their races. We are very proud of the time and effort that the sailors put in this weekend, especially in the heavy winds!

L 2-1 vs Salisbury Christian School

This was a big match and I believe we made a VERY strong statement today vs ESIAC foe, Salisbury Christian School on their field in another tight and physically contested game. The Herons came out hard peppering the Jags goalie with 4 shots on goal just minutes into the 1st half, but were turned away. Almost immediately , with 2 counter attacks and 2 shots, the Jaguars took an early lead and finished both to go ahead, 2-0. Minutes later, the Herons tightened the match with a goal from sophomore, Nina Johnston off a beautiful assist from Senior Captain, Jenna Frederick. The remaining time in the first half saw Gunston take 2 more solid shots with Salisbury Christian taking just 1 more, but neither team could find the back of the net. The 2nd half was more of the same with Gunston having the better chances, mustering 4 more shots on goal while the Jags could only create 3 chances over 40 minutes.

In the final minutes of play, junior Captain Amber Tormey struck a solid shot on goal from about 20 yards out, but Salisbury Christian’s keeper made a big save to turn away the best scoring chance for either team in the 2nd half. This left both teams scoreless over the 2nd forty minutes and a 3rd straight disappointing 1 goal loss for the Herons.

Amazing efforts were turned in by everyone, with Amber Tormey and senior, Maddie Algier leading the charges. Amber dominated on both sides of the ball while Maddie stepped up and did a great job of containing the Jags best player and earning the game ball. Strong play in back from freshman Aurora Baughman, sophomore Lily Brantner, and senior Captain, Tess Kontarinis definitely made the difference in the match — keeping the Jags at bay for the last 32 minutes of the first half and the entire 40 minutes of the 2nd half! This was our best 80 minutes of soccer so far — which is a very positive way to move forward into the 2nd half of the season.

The Herons will welcome the Jags to Soccer ⚽️ Island 🏝 on Thursday with hopes of spoiling their travels and eyes on capturing our first win of the year! Go Herons!
