The Gunston Herons had their second home regatta of the season this past Friday, May 14, bringing home another win against the Freedom Rowers of Easton. Both teams had an absolutely fantastic day of racing and did a stellar job on the dock and on the water. Additionally, both teams had multiple athletes “hot seating” into other boats to allow for as many races as possible down the 1500m course. (Hot seating is when two crews share the same shell during a regatta and they switch at the finish line of dock without taking the boat out of the water.)

The first race of the day was the girls’ varsity and junior varsity 4s race, with varsity taking first place with a time of 7:43.0 over Freedom varsity’s 7:56.0 and Gunston’s  junior varsity finishing 3rd with a time of 9:21.7

The next race was the boys junior varsity 4+ with the Freedom Rowers taking first with a strong time of 6:47.05 and Gunston finishing second with an time of 7:28.4

Gunstons boys varsity 4+ rocketed down the course with one for their best time this season taking first place in 6:23.2 followed by Freedom with a time of 6:48.8.

The boys’ junior varsity 8+ race was accompanied by Gunston’s novice girls 8+ with the novice group receiving a 10-second head start over the boys 8s, which allowed for a great heated race.

With the Gunston boys’ 8 stealing first with a well-earned time of 6:48.6 followed by Freedom in with a time of 6:59.5 and Gunston’s novice girls finishing strong with a time of 7:13.8.

The final race of the day was the girls and boys mixed varsity 8+. Both boats rowed incredibly well and gave it everything that they had and in the end the Gunston’s 8+ kicked it into high gear to win the last race of the day with a time of 6:29.7 and Freedom crossing the line to take second in 6:56.3.
