Herons Celebrate Historic Fall at 2025 Sports Awards Night

The Field House was buzzing with excitement as the Gunston community gathered for the 2025 Fall Sports Awards! 

By the Numbers: Team Heron Keeps Growing!

It was a fantastic fall for participation, with almost every student involved:

  • An astounding 238 Student-Athletes (about 93% of the Student Body) competed.
  • We celebrated 48 Seniors who played their final fall season as Herons—a big round of applause for them!
  • A special nod to our 14 Team Managers and 13 Students competing in Independent Sports (everything from ice hockey to equestrian).

Fall 2025 Team Highlights: Making History!

AD Josh Breto and Associate AD Erin De Falco shared the amazing stories from each program:

Varsity Volleyball: Our First Championship!
Making history! The Varsity Volleyball team secured the program's first-ever ESIAC Volleyball Championship in just their fifth year of existence. With a dominant 14-1 regular season record, they beat seven top IAAM schools. They were nearly unstoppable, with 12 of their 15 wins being 3-0 shutouts! A truly dominant performance from start to finish.

Volleyball All-Conference Honors:

  • ESIAC Player of the Year: Liv Labrador
  • All-Conference Team: Liv Labrador, Scotia Hopper, Emma Nkanza, Allie Merkle
  • Honorable Mention: Addison Coldwell

Varsity Girls Soccer: They Finally Did It!
After nearly 20 years, the Varsity Girls Soccer team won the school's first-ever ESIAC Girls Soccer Championship! They had their best season in a decade, finishing 8-2 with 5 clean sheets (400 minutes without giving up a goal!) and scoring 29 goals. Their names are now officially in the Gunston history books!

Girls Soccer All-Conference Honors:

  • ESIAC Player of the Year: Ellie Roberts
  • All-Conference Team: Ellie Roberts, Brynn Roberts, Hannah Mae Conner, Reagan Johnson, Abby Philippon, Olivia Blusk
  • Honorable Mention: Addison Temple

Field Hockey: A Local Powerhouse
Ranked as a top-20 team in the state, Field Hockey finished the regular season 10-3. They took down the best in the IAAM C Conference, including a 7-0 win over 1st-place Glenelg Country School. They had an incredible 6 shutouts and saw Senior Captain Layla Kent join the 60-goal club with 62 career goals! They proudly finished as ESIAC Runner-Ups.

  • All-Conference Team: Layla Kent, Gabi Shepherd, Elena Szwaya, Izzy Labrador
  • Honorable Mention: Genevieve Baughman

Cross Country: Back on Top!
The Girls Cross Country team is officially a dynasty, securing their Back-to-Back ESIAC Championship! They were consistently the strongest program in the conference. The Boys’ team also had a great year, highlighted by all top five runners breaking the seven-minute mile mark on Senior Night!

Girls Cross Country All-Conference Honors:

  • All-Conference Team: Phoebe Fritz, Peri Overton, Ee-Leah Omey Torrent
  • Honorable Mention: Lily Weny

Varsity Boys Soccer: Playoff Contenders!
In only their second year in the MIAA, the Varsity Boys finished 3rd in the conference with a 6-2 record. They established a fun new reputation around the league for "Undefeated Seasons Ruined!" for the second year in a row. They are now firmly established as a perennial playoff program. (The MIAA All-Conference team will be announced soon!)

Waterfront Sports: Crew and Sailing
Sailing had a huge year, with the T1 Varsity team qualifying for the prestigious MASSA Fall Invitational Regatta in Buffalo, NY, where they finished an impressive fourth place!

Crew tackled their most ambitious fall season ever with six events, gaining valuable experience in major races.

JV Highlights

JV Volleyball: The team finished their fourth straight season with a winning record (7-3) and remained undefeated in conference play for four years running—losing only one conference set in that entire time!

JV Boys Soccer: The team showed massive heart in a tough, expanded MIAA C Conference, battling defending champs to a 2-2 tie and earning a huge 2-1 conference win.

Around the Nest: 11/20/2025

Varsity Girls Basketball powered past Key School 40-28, driven by Layla Kent’s 10 points and Eleanor Owings’ 6 steals. In the pool, the Varsity Boys Swim Team secured a decisive 88-61 win against Salisbury Christian, highlighted by multiple relay victories and individual wins from Landon Kelley ’27 and Jack Owens ’27, while the Girls Team also achieved a notable victory with a 1st place finish in the 400 Free Relay.

The Herons brought home three major championships this fall in Varsity Girls Soccer, Varsity Volleyball (the program's first!), and Girls Cross Country (Back-to-Back ESIAC Champions!). We were also proud to recognize three ESIAC Players of the Year and nearly 93% of the student body who participated in athletics.
