Herons Celebrate Spring 2023 Athletic Season
Student athletes, their families, and coaches gathered in the Field House to celebrate their achievements at the Spring Sports Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, May 16. The evening began with remarks from Head of School John Lewis, who invited former Gunston teacher and coach Ned Southworth to speak on the athletic accomplishments of this year’s Hall of Fame inductee, Joe Cusimano ’12. The Spring 2023 season had 186 student athletes (about 75% of the student body) on nine teams led by 23 coaches with an additional 18 students completing an independent sport including sports such as dance, horseback riding, swimming and more.
Highlights:
Sailing
- They started the season by hosting the Gunston Girls regatta, a tradition for many years, where eight schools attended the bronze level qualifier.
- The team qualified for and competed in the Mid-Atlantic Scholastic Sailing Association Silver Championship. Gunston has not competed in this event in more than a decade. They competed against the top sailing schools in the country and landed a couple of 3rd places out of the many races held over the course of 2 days.
- Sailors went to North East River Yacht Club to sail in the MDISA Teir 2 Championship. With steady heavy winds it was the perfect condition for our sailors. Out of the many races both GraceAnne and Ian won their final races of the day.
- We ranked 7th out of 30 JV teams and 12th out of 25 Varsity teams for the overall season.
- A big congratulations to Alix Allison and Justin McCubbin for being the newest additions to the varsity team this season!

Crew
- This year we hosted the Maryland State championship for the first time! Our Men’s Varsity 4, Women’s Varsity 8, Women’s Varsity 4, and Women’s JV 4 all took home gold medals and helped the team earn the title of Maryland State Champions!
- The Women’s JV 4 “A” boat was also able to earn a gold medal at The Baltimore Invitational!

Girls Tennis: ESIAC Champions
- The girls tennis team took down all challengers! They went a perfect 10-0 this season!
- Against 3 separate opponents the team went 7-0. Meaning every single player on the team won their match.
- The girls put three gigantic exclamation points on the season by going truly undefeated in every sense of the word and winning the ESIAC Tennis Championship!
- What you accomplished this year is historic. Congratulations!

Boys Tennis: ESIAC Champions
- The boys nearly went undefeated this season! With only a narrow 2-3 loss to an extremely experienced MIAA opponent in Indian Creek.
- The team’s signature wins this year were against Saints Peter and Paul: 3-1, St. Michaels 6-1 and against Worcester Prep 4-3 to win the ESIAC Boys Tennis Championship! Congratulations champions!

Boys Lacrosse (5-6)
- The team had numerous marquee wins this season with the two most high profile being against MIAA opponent, Mt. Carmel 13-1 and Bayside opponent, Cambridge South Dorchester 7-1!
- The boys scored 74 goals this season on their way to making it to the ESIAC Finals!
- Jonah Smith moved into the top 5 in school history for saves in a single season with 199 saves this season.
- ESIAC All Conference: Jonah Smith, Mekonnen Sahle-Selassie, Zack Adams, and Eddie Gillespie.

Girls Lacrosse (5-7)
- The team scored 156 goals in 12 games. That is an average of 13 goals a game!
- Kate Campbell had 109 saves this season, averaging 9 saves per game!
- Their signature wins came against Bayside opponent Cambridge South Dorchester 23-3 and Chesapeake Bay Association team Bohemia Manor 17-3!

Triathlon
- The team competed in the General Smallwood Triathlon on April 29th. We had 7 athletes finish in the top 5; including 1st place finishes by Zach Mozher, Zoe Buzzelli, Colin Hallmark, Aidan Trautman, and Coach Stephenson in their respective races and divisions.
- At the Nanticoke River Triathlon the following weekend, the team did even better with 8 top 5 finishers!
- Good luck to the team at their next two events: The Crisfield Tri this weekend and then the MD State Championships in June!

On July 18, prospective Gunston volleyball players participated in a clinic with Head Coach of Navy Women’s Volleyball Paco Labrador. Coach Labrador was assisted by Gunston's newest Assistant Coach, Jill Labrador.
Gunston's own Colin Hallmark placed first to retain his three-time state championship, and also finished 3rd overall out of 352 athletes! The Gunston girls also successfully defended their title with Zoe Buzzelli placing first and Allie Fitzgerald third.
