The Gunston community gathered in the Field House recently to celebrate a spring 2026 season defined by record-breaking participation, championship titles, and a surge in school spirit!

With 92% of the student body participating in 10 different sports—marking a fifth consecutive year of growth—the evening served as a testament to the thriving athletic culture at Gunston. The Spring 2026 season saw 228 student-athletes take to the fields, courts, and waters, supported by 26 coaches. Notable milestones included:

  • The Launch of JV Girls Lacrosse: Gunston’s first-ever JV girls team debuted this year, proving their mettle by defeating varsity programs from larger schools.
  • Senior Leadership: 45 seniors competed in their final season as Herons, leaving a lasting legacy for underclassmen.
  • Multi-sport Excellence: 22 athletes participated in independent sports, representing Gunston in equestrian, martial arts, gymnastics, and more.

Tennis

The Girls Tennis team made school history by clinching their fourth consecutive ESIAC Team Championship, a feat never before accomplished in Gunston athletics. Over the last four years, this powerhouse program has accumulated 39 wins and only 6 losses.

  • Annie Geng ’26 was named ESIAC Player of the Year 
  • The Boys Tennis team finished 4th in the MIAA, securing a dominant 7-3 record.
  • ESIAC All Conference Players include: Annie Geng ’26, Eleanor Hubbert ’26, Kate Andrews ’26, Scotia Hopper ’27, Abby Philippon ’27, Malou Trinkner ’28, and Honorable Mention Kennedy Cooper ’27.

Lacrosse

  • Varsity Girls: Tied a 10-year record with 8 wins and reached the ESIAC Championship game for the first time since 2011.
  • ESIAC All-Conference Team: Layla Kent ’26, Eleanor Owings ’29, Elena Szwaja ’27, Isabel Gerstmyer ’28 and Honorable Mention Olivia Blusk ’27.
  • Boys Lacrosse: Finished 4th in the MIAA C Conference, earning the right to host the first-ever MIAA playoff game in school history. (MIAA All Conference selections won’t be announced until later in the month). 
  • JV Girls: Finished their inaugural season with a dramatic 10-6 win over Easton High.

Pickleball

Gunston’s varsity pickleball team had an exciting season and the first official season as an ESIAC conference sport. Gunston took home the Overall Championship Title. Arya Shajwani ’26 and Lilah Wharton ’26 led the charge with multiple division championships.

Triathlon

At the Columbia Duathlon on April 12th, eight Gunston athletes competed in a field of 227 participants and delivered strong performances across the board. The athletes competed through a challenging course of a 2-mile swim, 10-mile bike, and final 2-mile run, showing real endurance and grit. Phoebe Fritz ’28 and Ella Baer ’28 also finished 1st and 2nd in their age group with Phoebe Fritz finishing 10th female overall.
The season is still going, with athletes training for the Rock Hall Triathlon and including a trial Gunston triathlon on campus next week. Best of luck to them as they close out their season later this month. 

Rowing: State Champions

Gunston Crew hosted the Maryland State High School Rowing Championships for the fourth year—featuring over 170 athletes, the largest to date—and finished 2nd overall in the state.

  • State Titles: The Men’s Varsity Four and Men’s Varsity 2x both took home gold medals.
  • The MV4 recorded the fastest time of the entire regatta.
  • Men’s Varsity Four included Eamon Schopfer ’26, Jed Cohen ’26, Austin Koterwas ’27, Zac Hatch ’27 and Coswain Emery Day ’26.
  • Men’s Varsity 2x included Eamon Schopfer ’26 & Jed Cohen ’26.


Sailing

This spring, the sailing program produced strong results at every turn: a 4th place finish at Tred Avon, a dominant 1st place performance at Kent Island for our T2 squad, and a 2nd place finish in Baltimore under extremely challenging conditions. Our Varsity team also reached a historic milestone by qualifying for the MASSA Gold Championships. Competing at that level places our sailors among the top tier in the region.

Gunston Girls Athletic Teams join the IAAM 2026 May

The Gunston School announced today that it has been formally invited by a two-thirds vote of the membership to join the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland (IAAM) as a provisional member, becoming the only school from Maryland’s Eastern Shore to hold membership in the state’s most prestigious girls’ private school athletic conference.
