Triathletes Compete at Nanticoke River Multisport Festival

On Sunday, May 2nd, Gunston's triathlon team competed in their second multisport event of the season, the Nanticoke River Multisport Festival in Bivalve, Md. Gunston had six competing triathletes (swim/bike/run) and two duathletes (run/bike/run). The triathlon event consisted of a half mile river swim, 15 mile bike ride, and a 3 mile run while the duathlon featured a 1 mile run, 15 mile bike, and 3 mile run.

The swim portion took place in the Nanticoke River between two sea walls sheltering the swimmers for much of the swim from the breezy conditions which created significant chop. However, the turnaround was just beyond which created challenging conditions.

It wasn't quite 'survival mode,' passed the wall, but it's not like swimming in a pool. I definitely got pushed around by those waves!' - Colin Hallmark

There were ninety competitors in the triathlon field and Colin Hallmark ’24 was the top Gunston finisher, earning a 2nd place finish in his division and 13th overall while returning triathlete, Thomas Umidi ’22 finished 3rd in the division and 28th overall. Ninth graders, Zoe Buzzelli and Allie Fitzgerald, earned 2nd and 3rd place finishes in the U19 Female Division.

Nick Abell ’23 and Aidan Trautman ’23 finished first and second overall in a smaller duathlon field.

“The day was breezy and cool which made for some challenging swimming and cycling conditions. However, our athletes were prepared and worked through the disciplines like seasoned veterans of the sport. A lot of preparation went into getting ready and when looking at each individual portion of the event, swim, bike, run, and transition times, each competing athlete had a top 10 time. I am very pleased with everyone's result.” - Director of Athletics and Triathlon Coach Jon Mellinger

Gunston's triathlon team will compete in the Crisfield Triathlon on May 22nd.
