The women's varsity basketball came out firing on all cylinders in Friday's (January 24, 2020) contest with Saints Peter and Paul in a pivotal ESIAC matchup. Senior Annabelle Gillespie and junior Olivia Hershey paced the Herons to a 50-16 victory.
'This was an important game on the schedule,' Coach Brian Aiken said. 'Not only was this a rivalry game, but we knew we needed this game to keep our [playoff] hopes alive and go on a little run here before Headmaster's Holiday.'
The Lady Herons came out fast and furious in the first half. They relied heavily on their defensive tenacity and held the visiting Sabres to one field goal in the first half. That defensive intensity allowed the Herons to score quickly in transition utilizing their two guards, Olivia Hershey '21 and Julia McClary '23, to push the pace of the game. At the break, Gunston led 26-8.
In the second half, Gunston continued to apply pressure to the visitors with a myriad of different offensive and defensive sets. Gunston's shooting was on full display as ten different players scored field goals in the contest. Hershey '21 hit three 3's in the fourth quarter to bring her total to 12 points on the evening, leading all scorers. McClary '23 added 9 points, 4 assists and Gillespie 6 points and 8 rebounds of their own.
Gunston will play in back to back league contests against Holly Grove and Saint Thomas More on 1/27 and 1/28.
