Henry Shifrin’ 21 is making waves in the world of journalism and political science. Currently pursuing a combined major in Journalism and Political Science at Northeastern University, Henry is set to graduate in December 2025. His academic journey has been both dynamic and hands-on, thanks to Northeastern's unique co-op program, which allows students to gain real-world experience by working full-time for six months instead of attending traditional semesters.

Henry’s first co-op experience was with the Tours Department at the Massachusetts State House, where he served under the Secretary of the Commonwealth’s office. There, he guided both the general public and legislative staff through the historic building, while also assisting with various administrative tasks. “This experience helped me to develop a deep understanding of the intersection between public service and communication,” said Henry.

Currently, Henry is working as a Photography Co-op in the Governor’s Press Office at the Massachusetts State House. Working closely with the Director of Photography, Henry is part of a small but mighty team responsible for documenting the activities of Governor Maura Healey and Lt. Governor Kim Driscoll. His work varies daily, from covering events like the Massachusetts Ice Cream Trail launch at a dairy farm to photographing the 10th anniversary of the Ice Bucket Challenge at Fenway Park. Henry's photos are integral to the state’s official social media platforms and press releases, capturing moments that define the administration.

“I'm still up in the air as to whether or not I want to continue working directly in politics or shift over to work for a news outlet,” said Henry. “Having a degree in both politics and journalism allows me to feel comfortable whether I am behind the lens, drafting policy, or writing an article. I really have enjoyed using the skills of my journalism degree in a more digital field, and using some of the skills from my more multimedia oriented courses! Northeastern has been great about providing classes that really prepare us to live and work in the 21st century, as opposed to a more print centric degree. I'd really be thrilled in any position doing political photography. I'd love to work for the New York Times or Washington Post someday, but I'd be just as thrilled working for the White House or for the legislature in DC.”
