Sam Johnson ’18 is a recipient of Oxford University’s 23-24 Ertegun Scholarship, a prestigious award given each year to just 15 students from all across the globe. Sam is one of only two students from the United States to receive this award. He is attending Oxford University as a Graduate student, continuing his study in maritime history. After graduating from St. Mary’s College of Maryland with a degree in history and a minor in anthropology and museum studies, he took a gap year before applying to graduate school and worked at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels as a shipwright, assisting on the construction of the new Maryland Dove. He then sailed aboard the last Great Lakes three-masted schooner, the Denis Sullivan, as crew and ship’s carpenter for World Ocean School, sailing from Florida to St. Croix, USVI before heading north to Boston, Mass. Sam hopes to stay in England, as he pursues both work and a future Ph.D. in the maritime field.
