Science & Engineering Club Launches Balloon
by Logan Kille '25
The Science and Engineering Club successfully launched a balloon to explore the stratosphere this past weekend. Led by commander Alex McIntyre '25 and payload specialist Owen Daffron '25, the balloon reached an altitude of 18 miles before popping and descending by parachute into an Amish soybean field southeast of Dover—just a mile from junior Conor Joyce's prediction. Ben Gilbert '25 and Blake Algier '26 participated in filling the balloon. Willem Grant '27 tracked the GPS coordinates using HAM radio signals received by ground stations that Dylan Chiochetti '27 helped construct. AJ Friedrich '27 collected temperature data from a probe, recording a chilling -72 degrees Fahrenheit. We even received live-streamed pictures during the flight! Many others contributed to the project, including Mr. Redding and Mr. Wegner, P’13. Congratulations to everyone who supported this exciting endeavor!
