Student-athletes (and siblings) Mauriana ’28 and Isaac ’30 Wichlinski recently tackled a formidable endurance challenge: the annual Pemberton 24 ultra-running event held at Pemberton Historical Park in Salisbury, Md.
The unique 24-hour trail race tests physical and mental endurance to the limit. Every hour, on the hour, a new 5K begins. To receive credit, runners must complete each 5K within the hour window, competing around the clock from Friday evening at 6:00 p.m. to Saturday evening at 6:00 p.m. Navigating dark, unlit trails with headlamps through the night adds an extra layer of challenge.
This year marked Mauriana’s 5th year and Isaac’s 6th year participating in the event. Both delivered impressive performances, each completing 10 individual 5Ks—accumulating a staggering 31 miles apiece in a single day.
Their efforts were part of a larger family tradition: collectively, the Wichlinski family conquered 60 5Ks, totaling 186 miles in 24 hours. While the hard-earned soreness and exhaustion will take a few days to fade, their incredible milestone of endurance and family spirit stands out as an outstanding achievement. Congratulations!
