Every student taking an online course received guidance and support from the Assistant Head of School and the College Guidance office.

1. Advanced & Independent Study

Gunston’s focus on personalized instruction means our curriculum expands to meet the ambitions of our most driven students. If a student is ready to pursue a deeper, more rigorous study of an academic discipline beyond our standard course catalog, we give them the framework to build it.

  • Design Your Own Course: Students who seek specialized study can partner directly with a faculty mentor to design a fully credited course tailored to their unique academic passions.
  • Rigorous Oversight: To ensure college-preparatory rigor, all independent study proposals are formally approved and overseen by the Department Chair and the Assistant Head of School.
  • Diverse Disciplines: Gunston students have successfully designed and completed independent study courses in fields such as art history, metallurgy, music theory, advanced mathematics, advanced science, German, Chinese, and specialized literature.

2. Dual Enrollment (College Credit)

For students who want to test themselves with college-level rigor and jumpstart their higher education journey, Gunston allows you to pursue online dual enrollment courses through any accredited college or university.

  • Earn College Credits: Students have the unique opportunity to simultaneously earn high school credits toward graduation and fully transferable college credits.
  • Curriculum Enrichment: While dual enrollment courses cannot be substituted for Gunston's core required curriculum, students may use this program to explore specialized electives and advanced topics not typically offered on our high school campus.
  • Expert Guidance: This pathway is closely directed by the Assistant Head of School, the Director of College Guidance, and the student's academic advisor to ensure a healthy, balanced schedule.

3. Summer & Online Acceleration

We recognize that learning doesn't stop in June, and technology offers limitless classrooms. Gunston embraces flexible, modern learning models to facilitate academic enrichment and course acceleration on a student's own schedule.

  • Summer Courses: Students looking to accelerate their coursework or explore a subject ahead of the academic year can enroll in approved summer classes. Options include on-campus summer programs, accredited courses at external schools or colleges, or structured online platforms.
  • Nationally Recognized Online Learning: To expand our on-campus curriculum and promote independent learning, Gunston encourages qualified students to enroll in nationally recognized online courses during the school year.
  • Future-Ready Skills: Navigating an online classroom teaches students vital real-world skills in time management, self-advocacy, and independent study.
  • Built-In Mentorship: Every student taking an online course is paired with a dedicated Gunston teacher-mentor, the Assistant Head of School, and the Director of College Guidance to ensure daily accountability and success.
