Senior Internships

The Senior Internship Program is a capstone experiential learning opportunity that takes place over two weeks at the end of the senior year. Eligible seniors have the unique opportunity to design a meaningful, volunteer career experience, allowing them to explore a professional field of interest in lieu of taking spring final examinations. Internships require a minimum commitment of five hours daily. Students have previously secured placements in a wide variety of fields, including the Smithsonian, local hospitals, environmental agencies, law offices, veterinary clinics, state government, and media outlets. This firsthand workforce experience builds self-assurance, professionalism, and clarity as students prepare for graduation and college beyond.

Eligibility Requirements

To bypass final exams and participate in the internship program, seniors must maintain strong academic and behavioral standing. A student remains eligible provided they:

  • Academic Standing: Maintain a cumulative average of 73 or above in major academic subjects for the year, with no failing grades (F or N) in the final quarter.
  • Graduation Credits: Be on track to successfully meet all required course credits for graduation.
  • Community Service: Have fully completed and logged their graduation community service requirement.
  • Disciplinary Standing: Receive no disciplinary censure from the school for community responsibility violations.

Seniors who do not meet these eligibility requirements, or who choose not to participate, will attend regular classes and sit for scheduled semester final exams.

The Proposal Process

Seniors wishing to participate must submit a formal, typed proposal via Google Drive to the Assistant Head of School. A copy of the proposal will be shared with the student's academic advisor. The proposal must include:

  • Project Description: A comprehensive, one-page outline detailing the internship's objectives, goals, and expected learning outcomes.
  • Organization Details: The official name and physical address of the host organization.
  • Supervisor Contact: The name and direct email address of the student’s immediate workspace supervisor.
  • Clearances: Formal sign-offs from both the senior and their parents/guardians.

Interview & Evaluation

  • The Interview: Upon submitting a proposal, the student participates in an informal interview with the Assistant Head of School to discuss their goals and commitment. If a proposal needs refinement, the student has one week to revise it for a second review.
  • The Final Evaluation: At the conclusion of the two weeks, the site supervisor completes a formal performance evaluation of the student. This evaluation measures promptness, public interaction, and task completion, and becomes a permanent part of the student's school record.
