American Rocketry Challenge (TARC)

Gunston’s Aerospace Engineering initiative gives students a literal launchpad for applied physics. Our rocketry team competes directly in The American Rocketry Challenge (TARC)—the world’s largest rocket contest—designing and fabricating model aerospace vehicles from the ground up.

Gunston Gearios (FTC Robotics Team 9530)

The Gunston Gearios are our premier competitive robotics squad. Operated like a professional engineering firm, the team tasks students with designing, building, coding, and driving custom robots to compete in complex, themed field games against top-tier teams from across the mid-Atlantic.The Gunston Gearios boast the proud distinction of being the only competitive robotics team representing Maryland’s Eastern Shore in the global FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) league.

Computer Science

A National Pilot School for Cyber Defense

Gunston holds the elite distinction of being selected to participate in the College Board’s official AP Computer Science Cybersecurity Pathway pilot program.

As one of the select schools in the nation trusted to implement this cutting-edge framework, Gunston offers students a rare opportunity to master the principles of cryptography, network security, and data threat protection at a college level. This innovative curriculum provides our scholars with an early, direct pipeline into one of the fastest-growing and most critical fields in the global economy.

The Science & Engineering Club & Community Outreach

Working in tandem with our competitive teams, Gunston's broader STEM initiatives offer a home for students eager to dive into diverse applied technology spaces outside of traditional class structures.

  • Near-Space Balloon Missions: Depending on student interests year to year, club members engage in high-altitude engineering, launching weather balloons to the upper atmosphere to capture telemetry data and photography.
  • STEM Community Outreach: Leading the tech charge off-campus, our students regularly take our custom robots and engineering models "on tour" to local middle schools and regional STEM festivals, inspiring the next generation of young innovators on the Eastern Shore.
