Athletic Hall of Fame

The Gunston School is proud to announce the induction of Adam Hock ’03 and Cole Meyerhoff ’11 into the Athletic Hall of Fame. This prestigious honor recognizes alumni who have demonstrated exceptional athletic ability, leadership, and a commitment to the values of the Gunston community. Both inductees will be celebrated for their multi-sport contributions and their lasting impact on the Heron athletic legacy.

Adam Hock, a member of the Class of 2003, was a transformative force during his tenure at Gunston. While a standout leader on the soccer pitch—serving as Varsity Captain and earning All-Mid-Shore Honorable Mention honors—Hock’s impact on the lacrosse program was historic. A two-time captain, Hock led the Herons to championships in both the Eastern Shore Independent Athletic Conference (ESIAC) and the Mid-Atlantic Independent Lacrosse League (MILL) in 2003. His senior season remains one of the most decorated in school history, earning him the title of ESIAC Player of the Year. Hock’s name remains a fixture in the Gunston record books, where he currently sits tied for first all-time in both single-season assists (36) and career assists (65), and ranks tenth all-time in total career points with 113.

“As far as Adam is concerned, he was a tank. The only thing he didn’t want to do was leave the field. We all know those kids who will work hard in the classroom to get to a field. That was Adam. Looking back in time, I often saw him winded on the field. It didn’t matter. I had a heck of a time trying to get him to take a break on the sideline and catch his breath. He was an incredible athlete and fierce competitor. The truly neat thing about Adam was that, while he was a fierce competitor, he was also a great teammate and mentor to younger players. As a captain, he led by example and let his passion for soccer and lacrosse pour out of him. His teammates looked up to him; they tried to match his energy and commitment, and they responded to his leadership,” said Marc Buckley, P’20’26 who served as Gunston’s Lacrosse Coach and Director of Admissions at the time.

Cole Meyerhoff, a member of the Class of 2011, represents the epitome of the versatile scholar-athlete. During his career at Gunston, Meyerhoff competed in five different sports: soccer, lacrosse, basketball, swimming, and sailing. He served as Varsity Soccer Captain and Sailing Captain, while earning the ESIAC Sportsmanship Award for his conduct on the lacrosse field—a testament to his character and leadership. Meyerhoff’s dedication led him to St. Mary’s College of Maryland, where he was a four-year walk-on defenseman for the lacrosse team. At the collegiate level, he was named a team captain and was a multi-year member of the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) All-Academic Team, proving that leadership and academic rigor go hand-in-hand.

“Cole is a graduate whose athletic journey reflects athletic prowess, commitment, leadership, and character,” explained Assistant Head of School Christie Grabis. “Cole was part of championship-caliber teams. He was a captain. He was an award recipient. More than his accomplishments, Cole consistently demonstrated the qualities that define our program—showing up with purpose, competing with integrity, and elevating those around him through his example. He represented his teams, his coaches, and our school with quiet confidence and genuine respect.”

The Gunston School is proud to announce the induction of the legendary 2000 Varsity Field Hockey Team into the Gunston’s Athletic Hall of Fame. This exceptional team carved their place in Gunston history with a dominant season, finishing with an impressive 13-3-2 record and clinching both the Eastern Shore Independent Athletic Conference’s (ESIAC) regular season and tournament championships, a first for the newly-reincorporated Gunston Day School at the time. Not only was this their first season in the ESIAC, but it was also the first time Gunston had won a championship of any kind. They’re also the first team to be inducted into the hall of fame. 

Under the guidance of Coach Anita Gruss—who also won the ESIAC’s Coach of the Year Award in 2000—the field hockey team not only demonstrated athletic excellence but also set the standard for teamwork, perseverance, and sportsmanship. Captains Carrie Fredland ’01 (ESIAC Player of the Year), Rachael Osberger ’01, and Chrissie (Terpeluk) Parker ’01 (ESIAC Tournament MVP) led the team. The team’s success was widely recognized across the conference and region. Seven players earned ESIAC All-Conference honors: Jenny Dey ’03, Carrie Fredland ’01, Rachael Osberger ’01, Shaw Strannahan ’02, Chrissie (Terpeluk) Parker ’01, Summer Veltman ’02, and Laura Williams ’03. Four players—Diana Jeffra ’01, Fletcher Johnson ’01, Strannahan ’02, and Terpeluk Parker ’01—were named to the ESIAC All-Tournament Team. Terpeluk Parker also earned First Team honors on the Star Democrat All Mid-Shore Field Hockey Team, with Strannahan and Osberger named to the Second Team, and Fredland receiving Honorable Mention.

“The biggest part of this team’s success was our three captains, [Fredland, Osberger and (Terpeluk) Parker]. It was like having three assistant coaches, which was a luxury,” said Ms. Gruss. “They helped manage things and they believed in my plan and they supported it and the team one hundred percent.”

The full roster of the Hall of Fame inductees includes: Katie Willis ’01, Elizabeth Miller Walters ’01, Sarah Ross ’02, Katie Scott ’01, Cullen West Raphael ’01, Diana Jeffra ’01, Chrissie (Terpeluk) Parker ’01, Rachel Osberger ’01, Carrie Fredland ’01, Rita Baghdadi ’03, Cristina (Laggini) Mudge ’03, Ora Beth (Mika) Mills ’03, Summer (Veltman) Denise ’02, Katie (Graham) Phillips ’04, Megan (Moore) Dunne ’04, Fletcher Johnson ’01, Laura Williams ’03, Shaw Strannahan ’02, Lauren Breslin ’03, Jenny Dey ’03, and Coach Anita Gruss, who previously served as Gunston’s Director of Athletics for years. 
 

The Gunston School is proud to announce the induction of two remarkable athletes, Eleanora Keene '11 and Olivia Keene '13, into the Gunston Athletic Hall of Fame. Eleanora, a true sports star, distinguished herself in field hockey, basketball, and lacrosse during her time at Gunston. As a four-year letter winner and team captain in each sport, Eleanora demonstrated exceptional leadership and skill. In field hockey, she was part of the 2008 ESIAC Tournament Champions and earned multiple ESIAC All-Conference honors. In basketball, Eleanora's achievements include the prestigious ESIAC Team Sportsmanship Award and the Gunston Defensive Most Valuable Player (MVP) title. In lacrosse, her talent shone bright; she was named to the All-Eastern Shore Independent Athletic Association and All-Capital Area Lacrosse League and was honored as the CALL MVP. Eleanora continued her athletic journey at Guilford College, where she set numerous school records, including career ground balls, draw controls, and caused turnovers. She was named the Best Female Athlete at Guilford College in 2015.

Olivia Keene ’13, another exceptional athlete, left an indelible mark on Gunston's sports legacy. Olivia's dedication and skill were evident in field hockey, basketball, and lacrosse. As a four-year letter winner and team captain, Olivia led by example, earning multiple ESIAC All-Conference honors and MVP titles. Her leadership was instrumental in guiding her lacrosse team to two conference championships. She was also named Gunston’s Class of 2013 valedictorian before continuing her athletic journey at Puget Sound, where she broke the school's single-season scoring record and earned multiple accolades, including All-Northwest Conference First Team. Additionally, both Keene sisters won the Anita Gruss Student Athlete-Award during their time at Gunston.

“We are beyond honored to be here,” said Eleanora who gave a combined speech with her sister Olivia, “to be received with so much excitement, respect, and love is so touching and a true testament to The Gunston School’s ability to nurture and support its students, past, present and future. [...] Being a part of a team gave us the tools and confidence for self discovery, which is not an easy journey for anyone, but through sports, we learned how to lead, how to recognize strength in others and ourselves, the importance of diversity, how to handle pressure, loss and disappointment, and how to have an open dialogue with our bodies.”

The Keene sisters both now reside in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Eleanora is an oil and watercolor artist and owner of The Desert and The Sea. Olivia is an instructor for both Atlantic Challenge USA and for the National Outdoor Leadership School. She is also an artist and designs jewelry.

“I’ve come to appreciate the concept of legacy,” said Head of School John Lewis. “The traditions and values you pass along to others who come behind you. Tonight’s Hall of Fame inductees, Eleanora and Olivia Keene were the heart and soul of Gunston women’s athletics. They were great players; they were great leaders; they were great teammates; they were enormous fun to watch; they hung banners; and they passed along a tradition of athletic excellence that every student-athlete in this audience has inherited. Gunston owes them a debt of gratitude for the example they set, and the flame they passed along.”

On Tuesday, May 16, The Gunston School inducted Joe Cusimano ’12 to the Athletic Hall of Fame for his exceptional performances in soccer, basketball, and lacrosse during his time at the school.

His long list of accomplishments include being the boys lacrosse record-holder for career scoring with 205 goals and 75 assists. In a single season, he holds the number one record with 79 goals and 23 assists during the 2011 season. In 2010, 2011, and 2012 he was named Gunston’s MVP. During his senior season, he was selected as the Varsity Lacrosse Captain and as the winner of the Bob Scott Award, given to a lacrosse player who exemplifies teamwork, sportsmanship and citizenship.

Joe, originally from Centreville, Md., is also known for how he stacked up among other athletes on the Eastern Shore. He made the ESIAC Lacrosse All Conference 1st team twice (2011 and 2012). In 2010, he was a part of the ESIAC All Conference 2nd team. He was awarded ESIAC Player of the Year in 2012. Aside from his work in lacrosse, in 2009, Joe was selected to be the Junior Varsity Basketball Captain. He also was a part of the ESIAC All Conference 1st Team for Soccer in 2009 and 2010. Gunston welcomed former teacher, coach and fellow Gunston Hall-of-Famer Ned Southworth to present the award who described Joe's many accomplishments.

After accepting his award, Joe thanked his family, his coach, teammates, teachers, and Gunston’s former Athletic Director Anita Gruss. “Earning this award means a lot to me. I can truly say I wouldn't be where I am today without Gunston and sports and the people that enjoyed them with me during the four years I was here. Lacrosse and Gunston Athletics gave me a time to shine and [...] helped me develop some of the most important skills in life. It allowed me to become a teammate, a leader, a problem solver, and taught me how to succeed and make the most of every opportunity, even when we weren't always winning. Gunston enabled me to develop the attributes that got me through college at Auburn, my first and second job, and now has been a large contributor to a very successful business that I've recently created with my partners. [...] It's an honor to be back here.”

After graduating from Gunston, Cusimano went on to play lacrosse at Auburn University where he was named Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA) Honorable Mention All-Conference Attack, SouthEastern Lacrosse Conference (SELC) Player of the Year & SELC Rookie of the Year all in 2013. Joe graduated from Auburn University in 2016 and now is a Certified Public Accountant for a Financial Group in the Washington, DC area. 

Gunston’s Athletic Hall of Fame was established to honor and recognize those individuals who, through their accomplishments, have brought pride and distinction to Gunston and the community as either an athlete, coach, administrator, or contributor to the success and development of Gunston’s athletic program.
