February 2, 2018 | Issue 18 The Gunston Weekly The Gunston School Honors Harry "Stoney" Duffey On Saturday evening, January 27, members of The Gunston School community gathered to honor Mr. Harry "Stoney" Duffey at the school's Leadership & Loyalty celebration. Over a 50-year period, Mr. Duffey has been a student, parent, grandparent, and Chairman of the Board of Trustees. In his role as Board Chair, the school completed the largest capital campaign in school history, and grew enrollment by nearly 40%.
The Gunston School Robotics Team competed in the FTC (FIRST Tech Challenge) qualifier at the Naval Academy on Sunday, Jan 28. The team finished 6th out of 27 teams, the best performance to date for a Gunston robotics team.
GIVE DANCE RAISES OVER $1500 The G.I.V.E. dance raised just over $1500 along with several bags of school supplies that will be donated to Action in Africa. G.I.V.E. works toward school support of at least three charitable causes each year; one charity that is local, one that is national and one that is international. The organizations supported are voted on by the student body. This year's organizations are the Maryland chapter of Guiding Eyes, Wounded Warriors, and Action in Africa.
GUNSTON ANNOUNCES Q2 ACADEMIC HONORS Congratulations to the following students for earning High Honors or Honors for the second quarter of the 2017-2018 academic year. Exciting Announcement: Chesapeake Watershed Semester Gunston's Board of Trustees formally approved the launch of a new, ambitious, and important educational endeavor: the Chesapeake Watershed Semester. This fully-accredited, semester-long program for high school juniors and seniors will welcome eight to twelve Gunston students in its inaugural pilot year, and will seek to welcome students from around the region and beyond in future years. Utilizing the Chesapeake Bay and its watershed as the foundation for an immersive, rigorous, and interdisciplinary curriculum, and with a strong focus on the domains of environmental science, public policy, and sustainability, the Chesapeake Watershed Semester (CWS) is the only secondary school program of its kind.
